Candy Man

Do you want me tell you about my self? Well, I’m a plain old “Negro…he, he, he, he.” My name is Lucky, and I was born in Chicago, Illinois. My mother was a “Negro” (African American) from Washington, and my father was “Negro” from Mississippi.

The stormy weather in Chicago was horrible. In 1967 I said to myself, ”That’s It, no more storms!,  No more, no more.” Then, I took a Greyhound bus from Chicago to San Francisco. Once here, I said to myself, “I finally found the place I have been looking for. This is it!”  Here, people treat you like a human being, and the weather is not too hot and not too cold. San Francisco is my home. I found heaven in San Francisco. Thank you Jesus!

Mr. Huber was an influential person in my life after I moved to San Francisco. He gave me a lot of support and guided me in many ways. He was the owner of the H&H Café, where I worked as a dishwasher. One day the cook didn’t showed up to work and Mr. Huber gave me the opportunity to cook breakfast that day.  That was the day I became a cook.  Ever since that day, cooking is the skill that has been most beneficial in my life.  One of my favorite jobs was working as a puller operator (cook) at a candy factory making Baby Ruth candy bars. I enjoyed making Baby Ruths, and I enjoying eating them too.

Being able to get along with people and loving my job are qualities that shaped the way I live my life.
